The Town of Rochester’s Hometown Hero Banner Project is preparing to honor local Veterans in a special way, bringing the faces and stories of Hometown Heroes to the heart of the community. A project built on honor, history and community, the Hometown Hero Banner Project began in 2024 following the completion of the updated Veterans Honor Roll, which is proudly displayed in Veterans Park. At 50 Scenic Road, Accord. Inspired by the importance of preserving local military history, the banner project was created to recognize the Veterans who have served the country and to ensure their contributions are remembered by future generations.
“We hope this is the beginning of recognizing many local heroes,” said Kate Gundberg, Town Historian who spearheaded this project with Anna Henebery, Accord Fire District Secretary. “Each banner represents more than a photograph and a name. It represents a life of service, a family’s pride, and a story that deserves to be told. By bringing these heroes to Main Street, the Town of Rochester hopes to strengthen the connection between the community’s past and present while inspiring future generations to appreciate the meaning of service and sacrifice.”
The unveiling of these banners will take place at the Veterans Day All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast, 8-11 a.m. Sunday Nov. 8, at the Accord Fire District Social Hall, 22 Main St., Accord. The breakfast is free to all Veterans and their spouses. Admission for all others will be $10. Come hungry and enjoy a delicious breakfast cooked and served by Accord’s own volunteer firefighters! Meet the families of the heroes featured on the banners, hear their stories and help celebrate the lives and service of those who have answered the nation’s call.
