When were you hired and where did you work last?
I was hired at the June Board of Education meeting and began as principal on July 1. During the summer, I’ve been at KES working with faculty and staff and getting to know the school and community as I transition into my new role. Everyone I have met in Rondout has been dedicated and passionate about the students and community, and they have welcomed me with such kindness and enthusiasm. Previously, I served as an elementary principal for eight years in Cairo-Durham in Greene County.
Are you excited to be at KES?
I am very excited to be at Kerhonkson Elementary School! The families, faculty, staff and entire community have been so warm and welcoming. I was able to spend a full day at KES in June, and I immediately recognized how special the school is. The classrooms and hallways were filled with happy, smiling students and everyone engaged me in conversation. I loved it! More recently, the PTA helped me host a “Popcorn with the Principal” event, and I really enjoyed meeting so many students and families.
What is your background?
Professionally, I have experience working in both public and private schools. I have taught in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6, with fourth grade being my favorite, and I am entering my 14th year as an administrator. I began my administrative career as a principal in New York City for five years before moving back upstate and serving as an elementary principal in Cairo-Durham.
Personally, I grew up in Hyde Park and now live in Rosendale with my wife, Amanda, and our three children, Charlotte, Judah and Molly.
What are you hoping to bring to KES?
I am hoping to build on the many strengths that already exist at KES and work collaboratively with our faculty and staff to continue providing a high-quality education for every student. In my previous school, I helped lead the school to become a Model PLC School, or Professional Learning Community. I hope to bring some of the practices that have been impactful for student learning and instruction while also learning from the great work that is already happening at KES.
Any programs you are excited about implementing?
This year, Rondout has adopted a social-emotional learning curriculum called CharacterStrong. I am excited to work with our teachers and counselors to support the implementation of the program and help students develop the skills they need to identify and regulate their emotions, solve problems, and build positive relationships. I think these are important skills that will benefit our students not only in school, but throughout their lives.
What are you looking forward to most in your position at KES?
I am very much looking forward to the first day of school! It’s one of my favorite days of the school year as we welcome all of our students back, and I can’t wait to get to know everyone.
Have you met any of the children yet?
Yes! I met many students during my visit to KES in June, and I had the opportunity to meet many more students and families during our “Popcorn with the Principal” event. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again on the first day of school and getting to know our students throughout the year.
