Join the community, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 13, in the Steinberg Reading Room, at Elting Memorial Library, 93 Main St., New Paltz as Amnesty International Mid-Hudson presents an event with Sarah Towle, award-winning author of “Crossing the Line, Finding America in the Borderlands.” Towle returns to the Elting Library, a guest of Amnesty International Mid-Hudson, to continue the conversation started last year, as she unmasks the dysfunctional immigration system beyond slogans. She explains with unique clarity how Donald Trump transformed its “brokenness” into a weapon to drive democracy into crisis. She unveils how the Department of Homeland Security agencies came to be paramilitary armies patrolling US streets. And she compels everyone not only to get to the polls this November, but to join a new initiative, to create a nationwide campaign to divest from the detention-to-deportation pipeline that is failing everyone. Towle is an educator, researcher, author, human rights defender, nature lover, and choral soprano. She resides in an ephemeral borderlands, buffeted and buoyed by a diversity of languages, cultures, landscapes, and creeds. She has taught English language literacy, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution skills, and the writing craft for three decades on four continents across the age span in myriad class contexts, including under the trees in refugee settings. Pizza will be served. Towle’s books will be available for purchase and for signing. For more information, reach out to Zuckerman, Coordinator of Amesty International Mid-Hudson, at dianazuck@yahoo.com
